[EN] Mark Helias founded his trio Open Loose in 1998 with Tom Rainey and Ellery Eskelin. Very quickly, the latter gave way to tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby, although he did make a return appearance on Atomic Clock (2006). For this new recording, they returned to the trio format with only Malaby. Recorded during a concert at the Sunset in Paris, this album showcases the best of what this evocatively named group can offer: three musicians who excel in mutual listening, are great improvisers, and create magnificent soundscapes. Over the course of the nine tracks that make up Explicit, there is not a moment of relaxation in the interaction, a total cohesion born of each one's talent but reinforced by the long journey they have traveled together. But Open Loose also has a repertoire that demonstrates the quality of Mark Helias's composition: around melodies that leave a lasting impression, there is a rigor in the sequence of written/improvised passages and in the dramaturgy of the compositions that provide a real launching pad for the three artists. Thus propelled, Tom Rainey dazzles us with his drumming rich in a thousand colors and his striking expertise, while Tony Malaby continues to assert himself as one of the essential musicians of the moment, one whose talent as a melodist, musicality, and expressive and rich sound works wonders wherever he plays. In the presence of such companions, Mark Helias provides the foundation, opens up new perspectives, and delivers some perfectly felt solos. A trio that is not often talked about, yet offers intense musical pleasures. To convince yourself, listen to "Story Line," the very Monk-like "Work It," or the explosive "Shorty One."

Très vite ce dernier a cédé la place de saxophone ténor à Tony Malaby, en revenant cependant faire une apparition sur Atomic Clock (2006). Pour ce nouvel enregistrement, retour à la formule du trio avec le seul Malaby. Gravé lors d’un concert au Sunset à Paris, ce disque présente le meilleur de ce que ce groupe au nom évocateur est capable de proposer : trois musiciens rois de l’écoute mutuelle, grands improvisateurs et magnifiques créateurs de sonorités. Au fil des neuf morceaux qui composent Explicit, pas un instant de relâchement dans l’interaction, une cohésion totale, née du talent de chacun mais renforcée par le long chemin parcouru ensemble. Mais Open Loose, c’est aussi un répertoire qui montre la qualité de l’écriture de Mark Helias : autour de mélodies qui marquent l’esprit, on note une rigueur dans l’enchaînement des passages écrits/improvisés, dans la dramaturgie des compositions qui offrent une véritable rampe de lancement pour les trois artistes.
