about

Hôte Marge 06

[EN] Born in 1947, Dutch pianist and keyboardist Jasper van't Hof first gained recognition in 1969 as a member of the group Association PC led by his compatriot, drummer Pierre Courbois. They recorded together for Gérard Terronès, along with Belgian bassist Paul van Gysegem in 1971, on "Aorta," which has recently been reissued (Futura GER 27). However, it was with Pork Pie (Charlie Mariano-Philip Catherine-J.F. Jenny-Clark-Aldo Romano) that he became widely known in France and Paris, with the group making notable appearances at the (smoky!) Riverbop starting in 1973. He then traveled extensively, accompanying artists such as Archie Shepp, Jean-Luc Ponty, and early on, forming a connection with Didier Lockwood, with whom he recorded part of this new album. A nomadic musician, Jasper van't Hof has always existed outside the mainstream of the new Dutch music movement initiated by ICP (Bennink-Breuker-Mengelberg). As a result, his music has never exhibited characteristic elements of this movement. Often flirting with jazz-rock, this classically trained but genuine jazzman has extensively experimented with and utilized various electronic keyboards. This time, we find him alone at the Steinway piano to our great delight. While his pianistic approach will immediately appeal to lovers of "beautiful" piano, Van't Hof sets himself apart from many of his contemporary peers who, under the guise of pseudo-post-romanticism, churn out clichés under a deluge of notes that ultimately express little more than easy charms and superficial emotions. This album, extremely diverse and composed, and wonderfully well-played, offers a rare moment that only great melodists can deliver. Jasper van't Hof's music, also a great rhythmician, exudes intense and deep poetry thanks to a succession of often captivating moods.
