[EN] There are indispensable personalities on the jazz scene, and undoubtedly, the duo of William Parker and Hamid Drake is one of them. Their almost telepathic way of playing together, seamlessly following each other's lead, has been praised many times. It's a kind of supernatural understanding that never wavers from one concert to the next. And when these two welcome another indispensable personality, pianist Sophia Domancich, the magic of the moment is truly captivating. If there are concerts that absolutely deserve to be etched into the wax, the one this trio gave on a July evening in 2008 is one of them. Hats off to Gérard Terrones and his Futura Marge label for recognizing the significance of the event and capturing it on tape on the stage of Rue des Lombards. Because this concert is simply exceptional. Sophia Domancich lives and breathes jazz. She embodies jazz in her exhilarating and intelligent playing, in her continuous quest to construct the next phrase. In her approach to playing jazz, there's a way of experiencing it intensely, intelligently, and with raw emotion. There's a touch of Cecil Taylor in her style—in her dance-like playing, in the moments of interruption and resurgence, in the tension and release. It's no wonder that by her side, William Parker, a former collaborator of the Long Island pianist, finds his place. It's a familiar universe where he can shape the pulse, make the tempo rebound, or color it with well-placed bow strokes. Once again, Hamid Drake is a monument of inventiveness, a master of relaunching without frenzy or agitation, but with an authority that establishes him as the master of time. Only three pieces in this performance. After an opening theme composed collectively ("Washed Away"), the trio suspends time with a deep and solemn piece by Mal Waldron ("The Seagulls of Kristiansund"). It's magnificent. However, the pinnacle of this concert, a kind of apotheosis, is the trio's interpretation of "Lonely Woman." Conceived as a 36-minute suite, this version takes incredible paths between free improvisation and reversals, changing directions in the course, in the flow of collectively inspired music. These three musicians take us through countless detours to the point where we forget the original theme, which was only the starting point. William Parker, Hamid Drake, and Sophia Domancich merge and finally bring trance, the kind that spins and reaches peaks in a moment where ostinatos meet ecstasy in a rhythm-induced state of possession. It's magical and intense!

[FR] Il y a des personnalités incontournables sur la scène du jazz. Assurément le duo que forme ensemble William Parker et Hamid Drake est de ceux là. On a souvent vanté leur façon quasi-télépathique de jouer ensemble, de se fondre dans les pas de l’autre. Sorte d’entente surnaturelle qui de concert en concert ne se dément jamais. Et lorsque ces deux-là accueillent auprès d’eux une autre personnalité incontournable, celle de la pianiste Sophia Domancich, la magie de l’instant ne manque pas d’opérer. Et s’il est des concerts qui méritent absolument d’être gravés dans la cire, celui que ce trio donna un soir de juillet 2008 en est un. Hommage en soit rendu à Gérard Terrones et son label Futura Marge pour avoir su saisir l’importance de l’événement et laissé traîner ses micros du côté de la scène de la rue des Lombards. Car ce concert-là est tout bonnement exceptionnel. Sophia Domancich est dans le jazz. Elle incarne le jazz dans son jeu exaltant, exultant, dans l’intelligence de l’improvisation, en quête continue de la construction de la phrase suivante. Il y a dans cette façon de jouer le jazz, une façon de le vivre intensément, intelligemment mais aussi avec les tripes. Il y a du Cecil Taylor dans ce jeu-là. Dans ce jeu qui danse, qui s’interrompt et repart en scansion, en tensions et en relâchement. Rien d’étonnant alors qu’à ses côtés William Parker ,ancien compagnon de jeu du pianiste de Long Island y trouve son compte. Comme dans un univers qui lui est familier et où il peut lui aussi scander la pulse, faire rebondir le tempo ou le colorer par de judicieux coups d’archets. Hamid Drake est encore une fois un monument d’inventivité, de science de la relance sans frénésie, sans frémissement mais avec une autorité qui l’installe en maître du temps. Juste trois morceaux. Après un premier thème composé collectivement (Washed away), le trio suspend le temps avec un thème profond et grave de Mal Waldron ( The Seagulls of Kristiansund). Superbe. Mais le moment fort de ce concert, sorte d’apothéose, est l’interprétation que le trio livre de Lonely Woman. Conçue comme une suite de 36’27, cette version passe par d’incroyables chemins entre improvisation libre et revirement, changements de direction dans le cours, dans le flot de la musique collectivement inspirée. Ces trois-là nous font passer par d’innombrables détours au point d’en oublier le thème qui n’était là que comme point de départ. William Parker, Hamid Drake et Sophia Domancich fusionnent et apportent enfin la transe, celle qui tourne et atteint des sommets dans un moment où les ostinatos rejoignent l’extase dans un moment de possession du rythme. Magique et intense !
