[EN] Sylvia Howard, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 29, 1955, is a singer of rare intensity. Her life journey, which she reflects upon here, explains the depth of her expression. Raised in a religious family, she was immersed in African-American music from an early age, both sacred and secular. She sang in school choirs and at church. Her vocal talent was noticed, but while in Indianapolis, she was involved in a community theater, with a preference for working behind the scenes rather than stepping onto the stage. A few years later, she led an "ordinary" life as a married woman and office worker in Phoenix, Arizona when she found herself in front of a microphone on the stage of a jazz club. Without quitting her job, she embarked on a singing career, performing in restaurants, clubs, and festivals in the region. Things picked up pace in the early 1990s when she was offered a contract to sing for three months at a grand hotel in Singapore. From this experience, Sylvia Howard performed from one luxury hotel to another, from Jakarta to Hong Kong, and from Bali to Kuala Lumpur. Dreaming of Europe, she arrived in Paris in 2000, where she decided to settle. However, the era when Paris recognized jazz talents has passed, and while American and French musicians recognize her worth, the broader jazz audience still remains unfamiliar with this top-notch interpreter. She possesses a zest for life, and through her trials and tribulations, she has forged the authenticity of her expression.

[FR] Sylvia Howard, née à Indianapolis (Indiana), le 29 avril 1955, est une chanteuse d’une intensité rare. Son parcours de vie –sur lequel elle revient ici– explique la profondeur de son expression. Elevée dans une famille religieuse, elle est imprégnée, dès son plus jeune âge, par la musique afro-américaine sacrée comme profane. Elle chante dans des chorales scolaires et à l’église. Son don vocal est remarqué, mais si, à Indianapolis, elle participe à la vie d’un théâtre associatif, ce sont les coulisses qui l’intéressent; pas de monter sur scène. Quelques années plus tard, elle mène à Phoenix (Arizona) une vie «ordinaire» de femme mariée et d’employée de bureau, quand elle se retrouve devant un micro sur la scène d’un club de jazz. Sans quitter son emploi, elle entame une carrière de chanteuse, parcourant les restaurants, les clubs et les festivals de la région.
Les choses s’accélèrent à l’aube des années 1990, quand on lui propose un contrat pour chanter pendant trois mois dans un grand hôtel de Singapour. A partir de cette expérience, Sylvia Howard se produit de palace en palace, de Djakarta à Hong Kong et de Bali à Kuala Lumpur. Rêvant d’Europe, elle débarque à Paris en 2000, où elle décide de s’établir. Mais l’époque où Paris savait reconnaître les talents du jazz est révolue, et, si les musiciens américains et français connaissent sa valeur, le grand public du jazz méconnaît encore cette interprète de premier ordre, dotée de cette rage de vivre et qui, dans les fêlures et les épreuves, a forgé l’authenticité de son expression.
