about

[EN] Drummer Stu Martin, originally from New York, gained recognition at the age of sixteen performing with numerous prominent orchestras, including those of Billy May, Jimmy Dorsey, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, and Quincy Jones, among others. In the 1960s, he relocated to Europe where he played with some of the era's greatest musicians such as Jean-Luc Ponty, the Kühn brothers, Martial Solal, and John McLaughlin. A highly versatile drummer, adapting to various jazz forms, he became part of John Surman and Barre Phillips' trio, which recorded the legendary "Alors !!!" on the Futura label with Michel Portal and Jean-Pierre Drouet. He also took part in the ventures of Ambush with Charlie Mariano and Solaire (also for Futura) with Siegfried Kessler. His style is characterized by the use of two bass drums and his sharp, precise strikes on the toms with drumsticks. During his short career, Stu Martin participated in numerous recordings as a sideman before releasing his only album under his own name in 1970, titled "Sunrise" for the Marge label, where he introduced electronic sounds, featuring Gérard Marais and Claude Barthélémy.

////////////
