[EN] Born in Jamaica, where everyone learns to play music and craft instruments from a young age, Noel Mc Ghie left the country in 1962 and settled in England. He played blues, soul, jazz... and listened to Monk. Soon, his heart leaned towards great drummers such as Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones, Joe Morello. He discovered John Coltrane. Rashied Ali made an impression on him: "When you're 20 in the '60s, you don't seek to copy what already exists." Quickly, Noel Mc Ghie turned towards new musical forms. From 1964 to 1970, he studied music. In 1968, the Oxford University Drama Society asked him to compose music for two plays by Arrabal, Pique-nique en camps, and Guernica. In 1971, he moved to France, where he undertook percussion studies at the Municipal Conservatory of Clichy. In Paris, he rubbed shoulders with all the musicians living there and those passing through. Steve Lacy noticed him at the Chat qui pêche and encouraged him to join his ensemble. They shared the stage for three years. During these years, he played with Archie Shepp, Franck Wright, Chico Freeman, Bobby Few, François Tusques, Steve Lacy, Byard Lancaster, Mal Waldron, Antony Braxton, Hal Singer (a member of Hal Singer All Stars in 1996 and 1997), Myriam Makeba, Rhoda Scott. Open to all musical adventures, he performed and recorded with Colette Magny (1971), Marion Williams (1979), and Gil Evans. In 1979, he toured with Myriam Makeba (Nuremberg Open Air with the Who), performed with the Gospel Caravan at the Théâtre de la Porte St Martin and the Théâtre de Paris. Noel Mc Ghie taught drumming. He was a professor at the IACP (Institute of Art, Culture, and Perception) in Paris.

En 1971, il s’installe en France où il entreprend des études de percussions au Conservatoire Municipal de Clichy. Ils partageront la scène pendant trois ans.
