Le pianiste et multi-instrumentiste américain Jaki Byard a étudié le piano classique avant de se produire avec les groupes de Charlie Mariano, Herb Pomeroy et Maynard Ferguson. S’il a pris part à de nombreux enregistrements avec entre autres Don Ellis, Booker Ervin, Eric Dolphy, Roland Kirk et Sam Rivers, c’est sa participation au sextet de Charles Mingus à partir de 1964 qui le fera connaître d’un plus large public. Se consacrant par la suite à l’enseignement musical, il dirigera dès la fin des années 1970 un grand orchestre régulier à New York. Pianiste de synthèse s’exprimant de manière bondissante et chaleureuse entre la tradition stride, le style be-bop et le free jazz, il enregistra en 1971 ce piano solo pour Futura à la manière du grand maître Fats Waller.
