[EN] And here's the Open Systems Quartet, featuring Assif Tsahar on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Hugh Ragin on trumpet, Peter Kowald on double bass, and Hamid Drake on drums and skin drum. The latter two also provide vocals on "Hearts Remembrance." This album was initiated by Gérard Terronès, released on the Marge label, recorded during sessions on the afternoons of May 4th and 5th, 2001, at Studio du Théâtre la Fenêtre in Paris. I own the digipack version, a reissue without a booklet dating back to 2019. Assif Tsahar was born in Israel in '69, and he made a name for himself in the late nineties when he moved to the United States. I've listened to him on his two albums released on Ayler Records, "Soul Bodies 1 and 2," alongside Hamid Drake. Both are scorching live recordings, with the first one from 2001 in New York and the second from 2002 at the "Live at the Glenn Miller Café" in Stockholm. I mention them because, for me, they are solid references for this musician. This studio album allows me to continue the exploration, and what I hear suits me well. Hamid Drake is outstanding! Saying it is good, but being enthusiastic is better because he uplifts us and fills us with joy. His part on "Hearts Remembrance" is truly magnificent with that skin drum! A very powerful track. Gérard Terronès brought Peter Kowald and Hugh Ragin to Paris "especially" for the recording session. The trumpeter is versatile and has embraced free jazz after a solid hard bop foundation. Peter Kowald is a seasoned European free jazz musician, a sought-after musician who can do it all, and he shines splendidly here. One can notice the heartfelt tribute to Albert Ayler, "Fathers And Mothers (for Albert Ayler)," penned by the double bassist, which takes us to the realm of spirits and ghosts. The beautiful rendition of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," which has now become a jazz standard, and the other tracks are signed by the saxophonist, who is, in fact, the leader here, even if it's not explicitly stated. At Gérard's place, there's no "conducting"!
"Dream Weather" is dedicated to Laurence and Alexandre Pierrepont, whose wedding brought Gérard, Assif, and Hamid together and led to the conception of this project. An album without weaknesses, captivating, with great moments that seamlessly flow.

[FR] Et voici l’Open Systems Quartet formé d’Assif Tsahar au saxophone ténor et à la clarinette basse, de Hugh Ragin à la trompette, de Peter Kowald à la contrebasse et d’Hamid Drake à la batterie ainsi qu’au tambour à peau, les deux derniers chantent également sur « Hearts remembrance ». C’est un album créé à l’initiative de Gérard Terronès, sur le label Marge lors d’une séance d’enregistrement durant les après-midis des 4 et 5 mai 2001 au Studio du théâtre la Fenêtre à Paris. Je possède la version digipack, une réédition sans livret datant de 2019. Assif Tsahar est né en Israël en soixante-neuf, il s’est fait un nom à la fin des années quatre-vingt-dix, lorsqu’il est parti vers les Etats-Unis. Je l’ai écouté sur ses deux albums signés sur Ayler Records « Soul Bodies 1 et 2 » en compagnie d’Hamid Drake. Deux live très chauds, le premier est daté de 2001, il est enregistré à New-York, et le second de 2002, au live « at the Glenn Miller Café » de Stockholm. Je les cite car ce sont pour moi de solides références concernant ce musicien. Cet album en studio me permet de poursuivre la découverte, et ce que j’entends me convient bien. Hamid Drake est grand ! Le dire c’est bien, mais s’ébaudir c’est mieux, car il nous élève et nous met en allégresse, sa partie sur « Hearts remembrance » est vraiment magnifique avec ce tambour à peau ! Un titre très fort. Gérard Terronès a fait venir « spécialement » sur Paris Peter Kowald et Hugh Ragin pour la session d’enregistrement, le trompettiste est rompu à tout et s’est frotté au free qu’il a adopté, après une solide formation hard bop. Peter Kowald est un vieux routier du free européen, musicien recherché qui sait tout faire, il a beaucoup enregistré et se montre ici somptueux. On remarque l’hommage appuyé à Albert Ayler, « Fathers And Mothers (for Albert Ayler) » signé par le contrebassiste, qui nous renvoie aux pays des esprits et des fantômes. La magnifique version de « Lonely Woman » d’Ornette Coleman qui devient désormais un standard du jazz, les autres titres sont signés du saxophoniste qui, en fait, est leader ici, même si ce n’est pas dit. Chez Gérard on ne « cheffe » pas ! « Dream Weather » est dédié à Laurence et Alexandre Pierrepont, au mariage duquel Gérard, Assif et Hamid se sont rencontrés, et ont évoqué puis décidé ce projet. Un album sans faiblesse, passionnant, avec de grands moments qui s’enchaînent.
