[EN] Saxophonist, pianist, vocalist, and composer Archie Shepp is one of the most iconic figures in African-American free jazz in all its forms. In the early 1960s, he played a pivotal role in founding the Jazz Composers Guild, collaborated with Cecil Taylor in the play "The Connection," and released several albums on Impulse Records. Drawing inspiration from the great jazz tradition, including Ellington, Monk, and Mingus, as well as tenor saxophone masters like Ben Webster and his mentor John Coltrane, Archie Shepp developed a highly personal sound while respecting the harmonic and rhythmic patterns of his predecessors. After paying a brilliant tribute to Charlie Parker in 1979 with "Bird Fire, Impro 05," Archie Shepp returned to Paris two years later with a group of young musicians - Charles McGee (trumpet), Charles Eubanks (piano), Santi DeBriano (bass), and John Betsch (drums) - along with a surprise guest, vocalist Michelle Wiley. They recorded "My Man" for the Impro label during their performances at Jazz Unité in La Défense, dedicated to one of the most iconic American saxophonists and clarinetists, Sidney Bechet. For this tribute, Archie Shepp primarily interprets compositions by Sidney Bechet and, like Bechet, uses the soprano saxophone, with a special introduction of "Petite Fleur" on the flute.

[FR] Le saxophoniste, pianiste, vocaliste et compositeur Archie SHEPP est une des figures les plus emblématiques du free jazz afro-américain, dans toutes ses composantes. Dès le début des années 1960 il participe à la fondation de la Jazz Composers Guild, se produit avec Cecil Taylor dans la pièce The Connection et réalise plusieurs albums pour Impulse. S'inspirant de la grande tradition du jazz (Ellington, Monk et Mingus) et des maîtres du saxophone ténor dont Ben Webster et John Coltrane, son mentor, Archie Shepp s'exprime avec un son très personnel tout en respectant les schémas harmoniques et rythmiques de ses aînés.
Après avoir rendu un brillant hommage à Charlie Parker en 1979 (Bird Fire, Impro 05), Archie Shepp, de retour à Paris deux ans plus tard avec de jeunes musiciens - Charles MCGEE (trompette), Charles EUBANKS (piano), Santi DEBRIANO (contrebasse) et John BETSCH (batterie) - et une invitée surprise - la vocaliste Michelle WILEY -, enregistre pour le label Impro, lors de ses concerts au Jazz Unité à la Défense, ce My Man dédié à l’un des plus emblématiques saxophonistes et clarinettistes américains : Sidney Bechet.
Pour ce Tribute, Archie Shepp interprète essentiellement des compositions de Sidney Bechet et utilise comme celui-ci le saxophone soprano, avec une introduction particulière de Petite Fleur à la flûte.
