[EN] American baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams was a lifelong world traveler, performing with such a vast number of musicians that legend has it, it's easier to list those he didn't play with than the others... Considered a "black" musician from the outset, by the 1950s, he transformed the baritone saxophone's playing with his rich harmonic contributions, the mobility, and the extremely raw and cutting sound of his instrument (earning him the nickname "The Knife") and his great improvisational skills. Part of the young Detroit bop generation (Donald Byrd, Elvin Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers...), he then moved to New York and later California, where he successively joined the big bands of Stan Kenton, Lionel Hampton, Shorty Rogers, and Benny Goodman. In the 1960s, as a highly sought-after sideman, he became one of the most important soloists in the groups of Charles Mingus and Elvin Jones before forming a quintet with Donald Byrd and Bobby Timmons. A member of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band in the early 1970s, where he stayed until 1977, he subsequently regularly performed in Europe with various local rhythm sections. This album was recorded in 1977 during one of his concerts in Bordeaux, released on the Impro label, featuring the trio led by the brilliant French pianist Georges ARVANITAS.

Yes,yes, yes! I've been waiting for Dave to do this again...two brilliant runs by DDQ and Keystone were documented on Greenleaf back in the day; they were groundbreaking...recorded and released within 24 hours for each set...they were stellar performances and I play them again and again.
With absolutely no chance of ever being there, this is the closest i'll ever be to 'being there'...so excited I may need to lay down in a darkened room for a while! John Cratchley
This is a wonderful album! Dave Douglas is one of my heroes. He's more than a great musician. He has a vision for the music and a feeling for putting together a group which is unique. So, beside Joey Baron (another heavyweight and one of my absolute favourite drummers) he invited some young cats to this session. They play just great and make sure that this music sounds totally fresh, whilst at the same time being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. Florian Arbenz
