[EN] It would be interesting to list the collaborations that Tony Malaby has been involved in over the past few years. Whether in the United States or in Europe (particularly in France), he readily responds to numerous invitations from his peers in all realms of contemporary jazz and improvised music. [1] What stands out most is that each of these collaborations leads to compelling music, demonstrating that he can play in any context with great skill while remaining true to himself. This confirms that he is indeed a major musician. Therefore, it's not surprising to find him here alongside French guitarist Richard Bonnet for a new adventure. Recorded as a duo in New York, "Haptein" consists of short improvised pieces that highlight work on sound and the invention of a duo. Bonnet and Malaby were destined to meet, a conclusion quickly reached when listening to their work: a shared sense of sound, sonic material, and the ability to create a striking universe in moments. Each delves into the depths of his instrument, initiating a melody or rhythm that the other quickly seizes to rebound and push the music further. Between harsh tones and flashes, the music is stretched and kneaded, occasionally leading to very similar sounds, whether from the saxophone or the guitar. The atmosphere born from this partnership is urban and often dark. These two dive in without restraint, without a safety net, for the better, offering us a fascinating sonic journey. We are invited to traverse this path in real-time where the gesture is as important as the result because it unfolds with the flow of inventions. [FR] Il serait intéressant d’énumérer les collaborations que mène de front Tony Malaby depuis quelques années. Que ce soit aux Etats-Unis ou en Europe (notamment en France), en effet, il n’hésite pas à répondre aux nombreuses invitations de ses pairs, dans tous les domaines du jazz contemporain et des musiques improvisées. [1] Le plus marquant est que chacune de ces collaborations débouche sur une musique passionnante, preuve qu’il peut jouer dans n’importe quel contexte avec beaucoup d’à-propos et en restant lui-même, et confirmation qu’il s’agit là un musicien majeur. On n’est donc pas étonné de le retrouver ici en compagnie du guitariste français Richard Bonnet pour une nouvelle aventure. Enregistré en duo à New York, Haptein est constitué de courtes pièces improvisées faisant la part belle au travail sur le son et l’invention d’un duo. Bonnet et Malaby étaient faits pour se rencontrer, telle est la conclusion à laquelle on parvient rapidement à l’écoute de leur travail : même sens du son, de la matière sonore, faculté partagée de créer en quelques instants un univers marquant. L’un comme l’autre fouille le tréfonds de son instrument, amorce une mélodie, un rythme que l’autre s’empresse de reprendre à son compte pour rebondir et pousser plus loin la musique. Entre stridences et fulgurances, celle-ci est étirée, malaxée, aboutissant par instant à des sonorités très proches, qu’elles soient issues du saxophone ou de la guitare. L’ambiance née de cette association est urbaine, souvent sombre. Ces deux-là se lancent sans retenue, sans filet, pour le meilleur, et nous offrent un voyage sonore passionnant. On est convié à parcourir en temps réel ce chemin où le geste est aussi important que le résultat car il se trace au gré des inventions.
