[EN] American jazz saxophonist Ricky Ford has shared the stage with iconic figures such as Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Lionel Hampton, and Benny Golson.
Born in Boston on March 4, 1954, Ricky Ford, a tenor jazz saxophonist, embarked on his musical journey under the tutelage of Joe Allard at the New England Conservatory of Music from 1970 to 1974, earning his Bachelor of Music in 1983.
Ford's notable collaborations include performances with Sonny Rollins at Boston's Jazz Workshop in 1973 and recording sessions with Gunther Schuller in 1974. He later joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra under Mercer Ellington's direction (1974-1976), followed by stints with Charles Mingus (1976-1977), Dannie Richmond (1978-1981), Lionel Hampton (1981), Mingus Dynasty (1982), and Abdullah Ibrahim (1985).
As a bandleader, Ford has recorded primarily for labels such as Futura Marge, Muse, Candid, and Jazz Friends Production. His discography boasts collaborations with jazz luminaries like Mercer Ellington, Charles Mingus, Sonny Stitt, Red Rodney, McCoy Tyner, Steve Lacy, Ran Blake, Peter LaRoca, Rhoda Scott, Dannie Richmond, Benny Golson, Gerry Mulligan, Nat Adderley, Joe Williams, Mal Waldron, Yusef Lateef, and Betty Carter.
Ford has played a pivotal role in introducing new talents through his Muse Record releases, featuring artists like Wallace Rooney, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Danilo Perez, and Jeff Kezzer. In 1991, he was honored with the title of "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres." Ford's educational contributions include collaborations with Brandeis University (Master in Musical Composition) in 1989 and Istanbul Bilgi University (2000-2006). He has become one of the most influential instructors for many saxophonists and musicians in Turkey today.
Notably, Ford collaborated with ZE BIGBAND based in Rennes on two recorded albums, "7095" and "Sacred Concert." For this project, he commissioned a composition from Benny Golson for a Big Band format. Their collaboration extended to a performance on Mezzo TV in 2014.
In addition to his musical endeavors, Ricky Ford has lent his talents to the film industry, contributing to movies like "Chocolat" (1988) and "No Fear No Die" (1990).
