MARGE 23

[EN] Born in Fes, Morocco, in 1950, Abdelhaï Bennani was introduced to traditional rhythms in his childhood to participate in local festivities. Around the age of ten or eleven, he discovered Western music through the radio and jazz through records. However, it was a few years later, through Jimi Hendrix's records, that he encountered popular music that utilized improvisation as a means of expression. After completing his high school education, he moved to Marseille to study biology. Towards the end of his studies, he realized that music was essential for him to communicate. Therefore, at the age of thirty, he decided to dedicate himself to playing the saxophone and moved to Paris. From 1983 to 1985, he attended the IACP (Institut Art Culture Perception) and became acquainted with its founder, Alan Silva. However, deeply connected to his culture, where the transmission of music is primarily oral, he rejected written sheet music and struggled to find musicians to play with. He recorded his first album, "Ensounded," in 1996 as a solo artist (released on Gérard Terronès' Marge label, distributed by ImproJazz). From 1996 to 1998, he toured with guitarist Camel Zekri and drummer Makoto Sato as part of the Africasia trio. He realized a project close to his heart by recording the first album of the Abdelhaï Bennani Quartet titled "Enfance" (Marge / Improjazz, 1998) with his longtime companion Alan Silva on double bass, Makoto Sato on drums, and Itaru Oki on trumpet.
